Music News Letter

The Chee Dodge Music classes have been studying rhythm, vocalizing , singing songs in tune, and singing seasonal songs. This second semester is a time to learn  to read music notation and apply it to musical interments.

Kindergarten and Grade1 classes are using letters of the alphabet and finding them on Orchestra bells in order to play simple songs. We practice together, separately, and also learn the songs.
Grade 2 is a transition year where we start out using letter names and applying them to the bars on Orchestra bells. Then we start learning music notations on a Staff and applying that to simple ideas for the bells.
Grade 3 is devoted to music notation learning the names of the lines and spaces of the musical staff. Then we work on playing easy pieces on the orchestra bells, singing the songs that go with the music.

Grades 4 and 5 students are reviewing music notation and learning to play the school recorders (song flutes). These are pre-band instruments that make the transition of the recorder to woodwinds instuments such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, and oboe very easy when they go to middle school

The last nine weeks will be devoted to everything we have learned this year, plus movement, especially in the lower grades. Third graders will also learn to play the auto-harp, which is used to accompany songs with chords in place of a guitar
